How to get to Utila?

Getting to Utila

All contact information for airlines, buses and hotels is on the bottom of the page.

The primary landing spot for people on their way to Utila is San Pedro Sula International Airport (airport code SPS). It is located on the mainland. It is serviced by Taca, American and Continental Airlines from ; Miami, Houston, New Orleans, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. I suggest an early flight so you can get as far as La Ceiba on your first day, if not all the way to Utila. If you need to stay over night in San Pedro Sula, I suggest the Microtel Inn and Suites. It is not cheap ($58), but it is close to the airport and I do not recommend going into San Pedro Sula during the night to find a place, it can be a bit risky.

The next step in your journey is from SPS to Goloson Airport (airport code LCE) in the mainland port city of La Ceiba. You can get there with Islena Airlines, Aerolinas Sosa and Atlantic Airlines. You may also choose to bus it to La Ceiba.I recommend Hedman Alas. They have service from SPS to downtown La Ceiba if you can get the 10 :30am bus (in fact the bus to La Ceiba leaves at 2 :45 from San Pedro Sula, so if you miss the 10 :30 am airport bus you can take a $20 cab ride from the airport to the Hedman Alas Bus Station in Downtown San Pedro Sula).
You will arrive in La Ceiba at 6pm, too late for the ferry, but hotels are much cheaper than in San Pedro Sula. If you need you to overnight in La Ceiba, I recommend the Banana Republic guest house ($5 - $18 a night).

Final leg of the journey !

Okay, it is possible to fly into Utila with Sosa and Atlantic. So if you have flown into SPS, then to LCE and you arrive before the only flight of the day leaves, at 3:30 pm, you may be able to purchase a ticket right at the airport, to my knowledge you cannot prebuy these flights as the flight does not always go. So, I hesitate to recommend it. If you do manage, Hank, local minivan taxi guy will be picking people up, just tell him you need to go to the BICD. Hecharges a couple of dollars per person.

What most people coming to Utila do is take the ferry, the Utila Princess. It leaves twice daily for Utila from the Muelle de Cabotaje at 9 :30am and 4pm. It costs $15 and takes about 1 hour. A taxi ride to the ferry terminal takes ten minutes and costs $3. The Princess takes you to the inner harbor of Utilaand if you let us know when to expect you, we will meet you there !

If you aren’t sure when you will be arriving, when getting off the ferry, collect your baggage, and head down the ferry dock, take your first left and walk for about 5 minutes. The face of our building has a 3 story mural of a Whale Shark, hard to miss ! There may be staff meeting other people at the ferry, so
keep your eyes open for blue BICD t-shirts, they will help you get to the center.
